American Thanksgiving has always been one of my favorite holidays - especially since I always had a four day weekend with it. Since moving to OZ I haven't celebrated it. I have had good intentions but it has never worked out. This year it is happening - by accident.
Our son is arriving on Wednesday night with his partner. He has to be bestman at a wedding up North on Saturday. He told me he was telling anyone who wanted to see him to come here as he doesn't have time to run around visiting people. I said that was fine but reminded him that I can't have the foot down for more than 5 minutes so I can't be cooking. But it is important to us that our children always consider the family home as theirs - no matter how old they get or where they move off to. So I told Tris to invite down anyone he wanted for whatever he wants. That would be dinner for nine.
On Thursday night, which is Thanksgiving in America, it is dinner for nine. And our son, who is a great cook, is doing the meal. And his parnter is really good at dishes. We are subbing salmon for turkey.
Thursday is also the day on which hubbie takes his pledge in Hobart to become an Aussie. Our council never got their act together. Taking Foodkitty's advice I sought out help and we managed to schedule it for when our son is here. He is delighted and so is hubbie.
So on Thanksgiving we will have lots to be grateful for. Our son's visit, hubbie becoming a citizen and me not having to cook for a mob. Let the celebrating begin.

Big week for you; hope it all goes swimmingly.
The salmon sounds like a great Thanksgiving meal - I wonder how it will be cooked?- hope everyone around your table has a fab time.
cheers!
Hi Lin, I'm not sure how far ahead of us you are, its Weds in London so I am not sure if it is already Thursday there, I will be thinking of you on Weds/Thursday and hoping you have a wonderful Thanksgiving Day!! I am sure it will be a great day all round and now Tony officially joins the Aussies what will he do on the internationals now? lol! Wales seem to be on a roll they demolished the South Sea Islanders last week (and England actually managed a win against the Springboks - that must have been divine intervention cos God knows how on their current form)
Seriously though sorry I haven't been on line much, I hope your foot is getting better by the day and again I hope you have a very Happy Thanksgiving Day it will be great to have your family and friends with you and I know what you mean about them being able to know they can always call home ours know they are always welcome at any time - I even have the older ones land for breakfast if they have had a heavy night out and crashed near us, they know I always have bacon sarnies and strong coffee (I am currently trying to work out at Christmas whether or not I now need another table - my daughter now lives with her boyfriend so 1 extra and as my lot are all rugby forwards they don't leave a lot of elbow room on most tables - I worked out that in a few years time if they all marry and have just 2 kids I will have 20 of them so I think I will need an industrial cooker as well!!)
Take care
Love and hugs D xx
PS FG landed last night and we are off to our school reunion on Sat to compare grey hairs, wrinkles, middle age spread and who has the best beard or moustache!! (although my friends say that I am fairly wrinkle free as my middle age spread fills them all out - great excuse for eating more choccies!) as we all either head or hit the big 50 we noticed we are all turning into bearded ladies and compare notes - lol!!
PSS Taffy's so cute keep the photos coming!
Sorry forgot - didn't win the £120 million lotto - blast! - oh well there is always next week!
Hello! I am finally getting around to thanking you for the comments you left on my blog, and to see what you're up to.
I see you too are an American living in Oz. I have lived here for over 30 years and became a citizen 22 years ago. In those days they didn't allow dual citizenship, so I no longer have U.S. citizenship. I guess your husband is taking up the dual citizenship option.
We used to celebrate Thanksgiving here on the Fourth of July, when the weather is more suitable for large meals. It was a nice mix of holidays, and I'd always have a supply of kitschy July 4th and Thanksgiving decorations to put up.
Reading a few posts back, it looks like you had a spell in hospital - hope all is well now.
This is the first time I've ventured back into blogger world since returning home from 6 weeks in the U.S. visiting family and friends. I'm still settling in!
Hi L,
You recovered from Thanksgiving yet?
Hope the foot's starting to feel better... :)
